It’s the middle of August, and generally one of the more pleasant mornings we’ve experienced so far this summer. Let’s talk about snow!

With the dawn of a new school year but a few days away, that’s one thing that new Chancellor Kaya Henderson is focusing on. WTOP reports that Henderson is already making arrangements to ensure that snow days don’t cause too many problems for families, teachers and the such:

Schools are mandated to schedule 180 days of classes each year. In the case of school closures due to snow, a cushion of days are built in to the end of the year in order to make up the time.

“Our priority is keeping schools open as much as we possibly can,” D.C. Public School Chancellor Kaya Henderson said Tuesday on WTOP’s Ask the Schools program. “We understand that our children need as much time in school as possible.”

It’s no surprise that Henderson is already thinking about inclement winter weather. After all, a kerfuffle developed last year after the school district moved the last day of school from a Friday to a Monday to make up for a day lost during the winter. That move led many parents to pull their kids out of school in order to keep vacation plans.

Of course, with new facilities like this, I’d be amazed if some District students will ever want to leave school.
