For anyone who has followed the path of Chef Roberto Donna, today’s WaPo story by Tim Carman about Donna’s extensive financial management issues should come as no surprise. The story takes a searing look at a long history of debt — taxes, loans, unpaid wages — that started with the original Galileo at 1110 21st Street NW, and is an issue Donna continues to catch up with today.

While it is likely that Carman’s story does not include all of Donna’s debts, it counts the most substantive of them. We decided to do the math and add those figures together — and we estimate that Donna owes over $2.6 million to suppliers, landlords, employees and the government.

To take another look at this figure, check out the splits on where the debts are owed — it’s nearly split in thirds between rent, back wages and taxes and a whole lot of wine:

With that amount of debt, it’s hard to imagine how Donna will be able to break free of the cycle. It’s difficult on a moral level to patronize a restaurant that doesn’t pay its employees and to dine at a restaurant that lacks the requisite ingredients to create its menu, after all. And however dogged Donna is, he can do nothing but press on and keep a stiff upper lip if he wants to dig himself out of the hole.
