As the region continues to tally the damage incurred during Tuesday’s ground-shaking, Flickr user Mr. T in DC supplies us with this up-close view of the damage sustained at the Smithsonian Institution Building, commonly known as The Castle.
As you can see, the 156-year-old building, which remains closed today, suffered some damage to its exterior brickwork — there are some visible gaps in the masonry of this chimney on the east side of the building. Mr. T informs us that the area below this chimney has been taped off. All things told, though, the Castle certainly could have suffered far more considerable damage.
In other post-quake news, the National Cathedral will remain closed to the public through Saturday, and the Washington Monument has been closed indefinitely as engineers discuss how to repair a four-foot crack at its pinnacle.
