Court documents have revealed more details on what happened during an incident Friday morning that led to the arrest of an off-duty D.C. Police officer for assault with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated. Police say Officer Kenneth Furr jumped onto the hood of the victims’ car and shouted, “I’m gonna kill you,” and fired multiple times; five shells were recovered. While in custody, Furr blew a .15 on a breathalyzer test.
Still in question is whether the confrontation was a hate crime in nature, as two of the victims were trangender women. One person in the car suffered multiple gunshot wounds while two others suffered unknown injuries. MPD has stated that Furr was on restricted duty due to medical reasons and his service weapon had been turned in to the department.
The DC Trans Coalition came out with one of the first reactions to the shooting, but we expect to see many more in the coming days, including one from the MPD once its internal investigation proceeds.
