As we noted yesterday, it was the District’s trees which took the brunt of Hurricane Irene’s force over the weekend — in fact, the city has announced that they’ve collected more than 267 tons of tree debris in the days since the storm.

A coalition of city agencies — including the Department of Public Works, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Housing and Community Development — tasked with cleaning up the District in Irene’s wake have employed hundreds of workers to clean up the city, much of which was left covered in a canopy of downed branches and limbs. And the job is not yet done; DPW Director William Howland says that the agency is still sending out extra street sweepers and crews to collect bundles of branches collected by residents.

DPW notes that residents can also bring hurricane debris to the Fort Totten Transfer Station at 4900 John F. McCormack Road NE, if they don’t want to wait for a crew to come by their residence.
