Good morning and happy Labor Day, Washington. Seeing as how most of the city is taking the chance to reflect on a long and, uh, interesting summer today, we’ll be taking the cue and doing the same. (At least it seems like today’s weather will be fit for such exercises in contemplation.) We’ll be back to our regular schedule tomorrow.

Just as a reminder: all the usual federal holiday closings are in effect — federal offices, D.C. government offices, and all D.C. schools, courts and libraries are closed today. You won’t be getting mail or having your trash picked up. In D.C., meter maids also have the day off, as there are no meter fees to collect. Don’t forget that Metro services are running on a Sunday schedule, and be sure to mind the delays in Northern Virginia.

And now, a roundup of some of the morning’s headlines:

Cyclists Fire Shots: Two people on bikes opened fire on a vehicle on Saturday night near the intersection of 10th and F Streets NE. Police say that there have not been any reports of injuries, damage or a motive in connection with the incident.

We Knew It: Seems as if Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley left something behind when he was examining hurricane damage last week — his BlackBerry. The Times reports that O’Malley eventually got the phone back, and it’s a good thing: “It controls our missile-defense systems against Virginia,” O’Malley quipped.

Sometimes, They Don’t Come Back: A local family has spent tons of money and time — including financing a documentary — in search of their missing beagle, Sassafras. The dog’s been missing since April.

Yeah, Bloomberg Would’ve Fired Him Anyway: Former New York City Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith resigned after being arrested by D.C. police in connection with a domestic dispute with his wife in Georgetown. But his former boss, Michael Bloomberg, said he would’ve fired him if he hadn’t stepped down.

Livan on a Jet Plane: For a wide majority of the team’s existence, Nationals fans have watched Livan Hernandez pitch — but the ageless pitcher lost last night in what was likely the last game he’ll play in a Washington uniform. Hernandez was the starting pitcher for the Nationals’ first game.

The Darwin Awards, Kid Edition: The Baltimore Sun reports that a nine-year-old child was injured at the Maryland State Fair this weekend after he tried to get off a swing ride while it was in operation.

Briefly Noted: Local colleges upping emergency alert systemsMeasles, bedbugs infiltrating Montgomery County…Albert Haynesworth: “all said and done, hell, I’d give that money back”…it’s open season on “frankenfish”…Have you ridden on a new Metrobus yet?
