Glory days are here again, apparently. The Redskins are riding high, climbing back from a very shaky first half from Rex Grossman to somehow salvage a one-point win over an Arizona team with a Graham Gano field goal. As you can see, the newspapers, they like this Gano fella. (Only the Examiner went with an image of Grossman’s touchdown pass to Santana Moss, which, while less dramatic, was just as vital a play to the victory.)

But, all cynicism aside, things are going pretty well for the team. They beat a division rival in week one, and a team helmed by a former Philadelphia quarterback yesterday (always a bonus). Grossman doesn’t look entirely incompetent in managing what no one expected to be a high-octane offense, while new acquisitions like Tim Hightower are performing much better than previous years’ acquisitions. The defense appears stout, even if it is prone to periods of ineptitude in the secondary.

It all reminds this writer of 2007, when the team last started 2-0, similarly eking out a victory and beating a division rival to while doing so. That year, DCist alumnus Jason Linkins wrote that despite the team having “sputtered, picked up some dumb penalties, [and] moving backwards” at times, they still “gave you that first tingle that maybe the team was onto something.”

Of course, that particular team lost seven of its next ten before somehow pulling four wins out of thin air to earn the right to get outright pasted in the wild card round of the playoffs. But hey, for one brief, shining moment, Rex Grossman’s prediction doesn’t seem so aloof. Enjoy it while it lasts, Redskins fans.
