After completion of a pilot program which included 150,000 customers, WMATA announced today that all riders will now be able to reload their SmarTrip balance online.

Customers who’d rather use the Internet to refill their transit cards — those who haven’t gotten the chance to participate in the pilot, that is — can now mosey their browser over to smartrip.wmata.com, sign up for an account, and refill to their heart’s content with a major credit card. Riders who upload online will still have to complete their transaction by touching a faregate or farebox.

WMATA said that there would be upgrades to the system in time, including the ability to automatically upload money onto the card when the balance drops below a certain amount.
