Prince George’s County emergency crews responded to the Chemistry Building at the University of Maryland this afternoon after an explosion injured two female students.
According to a report from the university’s student newspaper, The Diamondback, the explosion — which occurred around 12:50 p.m. — forced the evacuation of three campus buildings. Two female students who were inside the third floor of the building were treated for first-degree burns after the explosion.
NBC is reporting that the explosion was triggered by a chemical reaction. Hazmat teams are currently investigating the building, and students have been advised to stay away from the premises.
