Here’s some pretty wild footage — the National Park Service has released three videos recorded inside the tip of the Washington Monument as a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the District on August 23. In each of the three videos — which I’m unfortunately unable to embed here — violent shaking and falling debris are clearly visible as tourists hustle down the stairs.
There is still no timetable for when the Monument will reopen to the public after post-quake inspections found several cracks and other damage.
UPDATE: Kudos to WTTG, which worked their television magic to get an embeddable version of one of the clips. We still recommend checking out the other two at the Park Service’s website, of course.
