Brie, mango, and cilantro waffle sandwich with spicy berry jam

Dish of the Week: Waffle sandwiches
Where: Wicked Waffle

Waffles tend to be associated with sweet toppings or possibly with bacon, but savory toppings work just as well too. Enter the recently opened Wicked Waffle.

Wicked Waffle has numerous typical sandwich flavors, such as a club, a croque monsieur, and tuna salad squished between two waffles. The “slices” are made in a half-filled waffle iron, allowing for a thinner “slice” — the best to maintain a flat surface for toppings and to provide a proper proportion of filling to bread. The waffles themselves are crisp, with a lot of yeast to make them thin and airy.

The wafflewich with brie, mango slices, cilantro, bits of jalapeno and spicy berry jam is kicky with a flavor reminiscent of banh mi. Meanwhile, the paprika and parmesan chicken with its thinly sliced chicken is moist and tasty with a lemon caper spread. The best part: all of the fillings are sliced thin enough that they don’t slide out the back and on to your lap.

The place is more than just waffles, too: if you stop by on a cold day looking for soup, the vegan red lentil al lemono is a tasty way to warm up.
