A local man who was found dead on the tracks near the Rockville Metro station over the weekend has been identified, but officials are still not sure how or why he was there.
The Examiner reports that 37-year-old Benoy Chacko, a pharmaceutical researcher from Gaithersburg, was discovered by authorities on Saturday morning about 200 feet from the station platform. Initially, it was unclear how Chacko had died, but now authorities say it’s possible that he was struck by a train or a piece of equipment along the tracks. Chacko had boarded the Red Line at Dupont Circle on Friday evening, but never exited through a faregate — it is “possible that he missed his stop or got off in the wrong place and decided to walk along the tracks,” WMATA spokesperson Dan Stessel told the newspaper. Chacko’s body was found shortly after the last train of the evening traveled through the station.
Metro Transit Police are still conducting an investigation into the incident. Anyone with information regarding Chacko’s death should contact MTP at 202-962-2121.
