This morning, the U.S. Capitol Police shut down several roads around the Capitol, including three blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue, after discovering a suspicious package.

The package, described by authorities as “a small metal cylinder with some end caps on it,” was discovered around 7 a.m. First Street NW from Garfield Circle to Constitution Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue SE from First Street to 3rd Street were closed as police investigated. Authorities on the scene weren’t able to determine precisely what the object was, but it was taken in a bomb squad vehicle and transported away from the scene. Pennsylvania Avenue was finally cleared approximately 20 minutes ago.

The investigation also led to a brief lockdown at the John A. Wilson Building.
