Photo by Eddy Noir.Mayor Vince Gray, who was getting arrested for protesting way before any of these Occupy people, has made it his mission to turn October into a month-long push for D.C. autonomy. Part of that push involves calling in favors from some of his celeb pals, who will record public service announcements denouncing the District’s second-class status.
Of course, it probably would help if the Mayor actually had the pull to bring in some real A-listers.
The big names that you’ll see on Channel 16 this month — haha, okay, we know none of you actually watch Channel 16, but still — include Rev. Al Sharpton and D.C. voting rights darling Hayden Panettiere. But the rest of the list is populated by people who we’d probably have a tough time picking out of a lineup (former Harlem Globetrotters star Meadowlark Lemon, anyone?), folks that have been chewed up and spit out the reality television food chain (remember Omarosa from The Apprentice?), and peculiar selections (Redskins wideout Donte Stallworth, who, don’t forget, is a felon). What, no Matthew Lesko?
Gray is planning a “D.C. Full Democracy Rally and March” to coincide with the rescheduled dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial next weekend; the PSAs will reportedly start airing on October 24.
