Six protesters were arrested by Capitol Police officers inside the Hart Senate Office Building this afternoon after attempting to unfurl a banner related to the Stop the Machine protest.
Somewhere around 100 people entered the office building at 11:30 a.m. as part of a planned flash mob protest, demonstrating in the halls of the building, which features several balcony openings overlooking a center courtyard. A small group then attempted to hang a banner from one of the balconies, at which point police issued warnings instructing them to stop. After the individuals refused, the police proceeded to make arrests. Those arrested were charged with unlawful conduct.
It’s unclear if the arrests will have any effect on negotiations to extend the Freedom Plaza permit for the Stop the Machine demonstration, which are reportedly ongoing — protest organizers are confident that they will be allowed a four-month extension.
