If you’re an aspiring shutterbug with some time on your hands this morning, you might want to make your way over to the National Cathedral — crews are currently removing a portion of the building’s pinnacle which was damaged by the earthquake on August 23.
The removed pieces, which together weigh around two tons, are being taken off the southeast grand pinnacle of the central tower, which suffered $25 million in damage due to the quake. The removal is expected to make the structure more stable — a good idea, as those daredevils that rappelled down the side of the Washington Monument are preparing to do the same at the Cathedral. (Here’s hoping today’s crane work goes better than the last round.)
The Cathedral is scheduled to reopen to the public on November 12.
