Bacon flight at Eola.

Dish of the Week: Bacon
Where: Eola, Restaurant 3

This week we pay homage to the most glorious breakfast meat of all time. That’s right — bacon. For better or worse, bacon has become so trendy that people are clamoring to stuff bits of pork into everything from cocktails to cupcakes. And while this does make me wonder whether everything really is better with bacon, a good quality slice of cured pork truly stands on its own.

Yesterday, Restaurant 3 kicked off their annual Week O’ Bacon with a pig roast, bacon tasting menu and a bacon happy hour through the 22nd. You can also learn how to cure your own bacon at their free bacon-making class on Saturday.

If you’re feeling bacon-fatigue, remember that all bacon is not created equal. The shriveled sodium strips accompanying your eggs at IHOP don’t hold a candle to the porky goodness served at Eola’s monthly brunch. The October brunch is this Saturday and features nine types of bacon from various pig breeds. The restaurant cures and smokes their bacon in house, followed by a 12 hour sous vide. The result is a pork slab that’s crisp on the outside but meltingly tender on the inside. A flight of three hefty slices will run you $14.

Small Bites

What would Tom eat?
The Washington Post has just released Tom Sietsma’s Fall Dining Guide. This year’s theme: restaurants where Tom would like to be a regular. While most of these restaurants seem woefully out of reach (if money and metabolism were no object, I too would love to be a regular at Komi), there are a few mid-priced gems on the list.

Taste the boat shoes
The 18th annual Taste of Georgetown is this Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Nosh on samples from over 30 restaurants and wash it down with one of the 25 different craft brews in the wine, spirits, and ales pavilion. Tickets are $5 for one tasting or $20 for five tastings. Proceeds benefit Georgetown Ministry Center’s homeless services.

Oktobeerfest: Because one E isn’t enough
Rustico is celebrating fall with their Oktoberfest block party on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Staff will be pouring a whopping selection of 50 different beers, including a variety of Pumpkin Ales. There will also be lots of tasty Oktoberfest eats, from brats and pretzels to schnitzel and turkey legs. All ages are welcome.

Food nerd book talk alert
Everybody’s favorite omnivore, Michael Pollan, will be speaking at the Strathmore on October 26. Pollan will discussion nutritionism, “edible food-like substances”, and the industrialization of modern agriculture. Tickets are $35 to $60.

Beavis and Headbutts
The Passenger will play host to Kopstootjes on October 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. What’s a Kopstootje you ask? It’s Dutch for a “little headbutt,” and consists of a pairing of the Dutch gin genever and a beer.
