Right now, the District’s firefighters are responding to the scene of a motor vehicle accident at North Capitol Street and New York Avenue NE. The accident involved a Metrobus and injured at least six people.

Of course, if you’re only following the official D.C. Fire and EMS Twitter feed — previously the city’s go-to source for this kind of breaking information — you had no idea.

Thankfully, there’s someone willing to pick up the slack in the light of Pete Piringer’s reassignment. The D.C. Fire Fighters Association is now tweeting live response information under the @IAFF36 handle. The labor union has, as of this posting, tweeted four times about the accident we mentioned above. The fire department’s official account? It’s been quiet all day.
