Photo by Nikoo’s Photos.Good morning, Washington. The District might have a reputation as a “second-tier” city, but let me ask you this: if that was true, would this much royalty decide to call the suburbs around it home? Wait — don’t answer that question.
Cyclist Shot and Killed: Police are searching for a suspect who shot and killed a cyclist on the 1600 block of Lincoln Road NE last night. NBCWashington reports that the shooting occurred around 8 p.m., but both the motive in the killing and the identify of the cyclist have not yet been revealed. Authorities are also looking for the person who shot and critically wounded a man near the St. Elizabeths campus last night.
Marion Barry…Mayor Again?: Last night, Harry Jaffe, who wrote Dream City (but one of the many books about D.C. you should read), participated in an animated discussion of the city’s political state at the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Library. Among the topics discussed was whether Jaffe and his co-author, Tom Sherwood, thought that the book could be written today — Jaffe didn’t think so, citing the numerous advances the city’s made in the last 17 years. Of course, if Marion Barry ran for Mayor again and won — as Jaffe actually suggests in a column this morning — that might be a good launching point for a sequel, we’d reckon.
Metro Workers Get Suicide Prevention Training: Can Metrorail station managers help to prevent people from committing suicide on the tracks? That’s what Metro is hoping, slowly funneling $250,000 and providing outreach training to its employees in hopes that they might be able to curb the number of suicides on the system. Related: the Examiner also reports that the man who reportedly intentionally placed himself in front of a train last week at the Clarendon station remains alive.

This Day in DCist: Last year, we highlighted the candidacy of H.E.R.O.S.H.E.R.O. Party candidate Sandra Queen Noble; in 2006, the National Zoo showed off its new Butterstick habitat.
