Photo by dcstreets.Good morning, Washington. The big news this morning is obviously the widely reported, but still technically unconfirmed capture and possible death of ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. The U.S. State Department has yet to confirm anything about the story. (Of course, we’re probably the only ones wondering how the news will affect this sordid local tale.)
Man Shot, Killed on Metrobus: Police are searching for three suspects who shot and killed a passenger riding a Metrobus last night. The victim of the shooting reportedly boarded a W4 bus in Congress Heights, and was then threatened by a group of men. Eventually, the confrontation led to shots being fired when the bus reached 24th Street and Alabama Avenue SE. The bus has been impounded to a crime lab; it did have cameras installed.
NBA Lockout Costs City: Precisely how much money will the NBA lockout cost the city if owners and players can’t come to an agreement? Michael Neibauer does the math and finds that it’s somewhere in the millions. The District usually collects around $2.6 million in ticket sales tax alone from the NBA season.
Occupy Lanier’s Heart: Clashes between police and protesters have been part and parcel of the Occupy movement, especially in New York. But in this The Daily Beast item, it appears that the relationship between D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier and the D.C. branch of the protest is downright cozy. Lanier’s been regularly walking around the protest handing out her cell phone number to demonstrators. Meanwhile, National Public Radio is investigating whether Lisa Simeone, a radio host who has become Occupy DC’s spokesperson, broke the outlet’s ethics code by affiliating herself with the demonstration. (The Post’s Katie Rogers spent the night in McPherson last night, too; her tweets are worth a read.)
Briefly Noted: Sexcapades aside, the Reeves Center is a pretty depressing place these days…Gray to tour National Cathedral today…Why do people jump in front of Metro trains?…So, you know, be sure to eat on Monday…Beltway to reduce to single lane in Virginia tonight…Cops searching for suspect in sexual assault of NE teen…MoCo teacher testifies that she didn’t strike any kids, just “tap them on the back”…Donations sought to defray costs of funeral for gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny.
This Day in DCist: Last year, The Black Squirrel and DCRA had an ugly Twitter spat and we were wondering where people would pee during the Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally on the Mall.
