In May, two Metro Transit Police officers were caught on video forcefully restraining and arresting a man outside the U Street Metro station. That wasn’t enough evidence for federal investigators, however: the Examiner reports a Justice Department investigation concluded there is “insufficient evidence” to charge the officers with civil rights violations.
During the incident, Dwight Harris was arrested by two transit police officers for drinking in public. Harris was then forced from his motorized wheelchair on to the pavement, causing him to suffer facial lacerations and bleed from the head. After video of the incident surfaced, WMATA claimed that Harris had resisted arrest and that led to him “falling out of his wheelchair.” The two officers involved in the incident had been placed on administrative duty during the investigation.
According to court records, all criminal charges against Harris have been dropped.
