Mayor Vince Gray is reportedly considering naming Deborah Nichols, the former D.C. Auditor, as his choice to head up the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics.
If nominated and confirmed by the D.C. Council, Nichols would head up the three-person board that oversees that functioning of the city’s electoral machinery. Two other nominees, including Republican Stephen Danzansky, were nominated in September; they’ll face a confirmation hearing on November 10. Nichols would take the spot that Gray had originally offered to Robert Mallett, whose name was eventually withdrawn because he didn’t meet residency requirements.
Nichols, who had served as D.C. Auditor since 1999, wasn’t re-appointed to a new six-year term this year. Instead, D.C. Council Chair Kwame Brown nominated Yolanda Branche, a senior analyst in the Auditor’s office, to take over for Nichols. Branche goes before the council today for confirmation.
The District’s election board has been navigating some turbulent waters as of late, with two executive directors having resigned since July and the three-person board having lacked permanent members for a long period of time.
