>> Keyboardist Will Rast‘s afro-jazz outfit, The Funk Ark, will perform the Mansion at Strathmore this week as part of the venue’s Friday Night Eclectic series. 8 p.m. doors / 9 p.m. show. $10 in advance / $12 at the door.
>> Vocalist Whitney James is an up-and-coming singer with a classic style. She will be at Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday with local heavyweights Frank Russo (drums) and Tom Baldwin (bass), along with her regular pianist, New York’s Joshua Wolff. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $20.
>> Saxophonist Tia Fuller has played with a number of jazz greats, including bassist Rufus Reid and singer Nancy Wilson. She gained wide exposure as part of pop sensation Beyoncé’s all-female touring band. Fuller has also has a career as a bandleader, and will bring her group to Bohemian Caverns this Friday and Saturday for 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $18. Stay tuned for a full preview.

>> Matthew Shipp started gaining notice in the early ’90s as a fresh voice in New York’s free jazz scene. Since then, he has reigned in his playing somewhat, but still pushes boundaries. He has taken the piano trio to new heights, and his skilled group will be at Bohemian Caverns on Sunday for a 7 p.m. show. $15.
>> Blue Monday Blues hosts harmonica player Charlie Sayles and his band. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.
>> Local Latin jazz group Bossalingo plays a variety of South American and Caribbean styles. They will be at Blues Alley on Monday with special guest and Grammy award winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $18 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> Groundbreakers Bela Fleck & The Flecktones paid a visit to the area earlier this year, supporting their most recent release, Rocket Science. Those that missed that show will get another chance to see them on Monday, when they play an 8 p.m. show at the Music Center at Strathmore. $28-$68.
