Good morning, Washington. At 2:00 am, Daylight Saving Time ended, Standard Time began, and we were granted an extra hour of cherished sleep. The bi-annual shift is much less tedious now that so many devices that keep the time are automated. Still, some people detest what they see as an antiquated ritual.

>> Four days before legislative elections, voters in Fairfax County received a campaign mailer — from an organization and a street that don’t exist — which calls Republican candidate Patrick Forrest “openly homosexual” and claims he is endorsed by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund. The mailer also claims that Forrest supports “illegal immigration reform, worked for President Obama’s transition team and has voted in Democratic primaries.” Forrest is openly gay and has said his opponent, Democratic Sen. Janet Howell, has been harping on his sexual orientation for months.

>> Residents and local leaders are excited about the partnership between the federal government, D.C., and Maryland to build a new set of hiker and biker trails along the Anacostia. Mayor Vince Gray told WAMU that the river symbolizes a dividing line in the city, but it doesn’t have to be that way. “We want to get to the point where we’re like the River Seine,” Gray said. “Or the Thames River, which have a unifying impact on their respective cities.” The Anacostia Riverwalk will give people in Maryland and D.C. access to a network of trails that run from Maine to Florida. The project is part of President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative.

>> The Washington Post editorial board weighs in on John Banzhaf’s complaint to the D.C. Office of Human Rights that Catholic University is violating the rights of its Muslim students. Banzhaf is a law professor at George Washington University. The Post writes: “It’s a little hard to take the charges seriously considering no one actually claims to be aggrieved. Mr. Banzhaf acknowledged to The Post’s Michelle Boorstein that he had received no complaint from Muslim students but was acting on the basis of a 2010 Post article (which, to our mind, painted an overall positive experience of Muslim students at Catholic).”

>> A 7-year-old boy playing with matches sparked a fire Saturday in a 3-story townhouse on Red River Drive in Centerville. A woman, an infant and two other children were inside when the fire started. All four were able to evacuate safely. The fire caused approximately $400,000 in damage.

>> If Republicans gain three seats in Virginia’s legislative election Tuesday, it will put an end to the four-year Democratic Senate majority and the GOP will control state government.
