As a recent home buyer, this makes me feel like the space I got isn’t so far out of the norm — Curbed wrote yesterday that the District leads the rest of the country in terms of how small our homes are.

According to a study by Realtor.com, the median size of D.C. homes is a mere 1,000 square feet. At the same time, we tend to lead the rest of the country in terms of what we pay for those homes — $425,000 is the city’s median price. (We’ve also got a median of two bedrooms and two bathrooms, while many states hit three bedrooms.)

As for the rest of the country, Hawaii took second place, Michigan third and Iowa fourth. Virginia’s median home size stood at 1,896 square feet, while Maryland hit 1,920.

Of course, this is probably one of those times where comparing the District to the 50 states isn’t particularly fair. We’re a compact urban environment, after all, and don’t much enjoy wide stretches of undeveloped land where large suburban developments can flourish. Additionally, much of the city’s housing stock is old, and older homes tended to smaller than their modern counterparts.
