Fifty hours after he was abducted by armed men outside his home in Valencia, Venezeuala, Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos was rescued by Venezuelan police Friday night.

“The truth is I’m still very nervous, but thanks to God everything turned out well,” Ramos told Venezuelan state television Saturday morning.

Details about the rescue are hazy. What is known is that Ramos was found in the town of Montalban in the state of Carabobo in central Venezuela. The Associated Press reports that there was an exchange of heavy gunfire before the rescue. The area is about 40 miles northwest of Ramos’s family’s home. On Wednesday night, four armed men arrived at the house and kidnapped Ramos at gunpoint.

Venezuelan authorities have detained three people in connection with Ramos’s abduction.

Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said in a release shortly after 11:00 pm: “We greatly appreciate all the prayers and thoughts of all who have joined us in wishing for this conclusion to what has been a nightmarish 48 hours. We are eager to see Wilson and let him know just how many all over the world have been waiting for this news.”

Major League Baseball officials said it was the first kidnapping of a major league baseball player they can recall.

On Friday night, fans in Venezuela and Washington held candlelight vigils and prayed for the catcher’s safe release.
