Yesterday, we discussed how D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has sparingly used her emergency powers to shut down bars and restaurants after violent incidents. Now it looks like Heritage India, the site of a fight which led to a shooting that left one man dead last weekend, is faced with much more than having its doors shuttered for 96 hours.

According to the Examiner’s Scott McCabe, the restaurant has suffered through a number of violent incidents this year, making it likely that the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration will vote to suspend or revoke its liquor license at a hearing tomorrow. Writes McCabe:

In the past year, there have been five incidents of violence at or in front of the restaurant, including two sex abuse cases, a robbery with a gun and an assault with a dangerous weapon, according to D.C. police records.

“Any time we have a shooting like [Sunday’s], we’re going to close the place,” said D.C. Councilman Jack Evans. He said he was not aware of previous problems at the lounge. “The overriding issue is you have restaurants that morph into a nightclub with promoters and bands and disc jockeys. What precautions are they taking for security?”

McCabe also writes that the restaurant’s owners have been called by ABRA to account for a number of the incidents, including a fight in June that sent two people to the hospital.

Unless Heritage India plans on surviving as an alcohol-free restaurant, it’s possible that it may not serve another meal again.
