Opening this month
- BUST opens December 1 at Studio Theater. With one foot in Hollywood and the other in jail, Lauren Weedman, the former Daily Show correspondent takes the audience us on a hilarious, poignant, and completely unforgettable ride.
- Heart and humor make Billy Elliot the Musical a joyous celebration of one boy’s journey to make his dreams come true. Opening December 13 at the Kennedy Center.
- At the Round House Theatre, the Female Voices Festival kicks off December 14th with for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf an exploration of race and gender.
- Spoiler Alert: Everybody Dies opens at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company December 6. The details are a bit vague, but the production promises “the most gleeful anti-holiday celebration of doom ever.”
Holiday Shows
- Based on the outlandish, true accounts of David Sedaris’ experience as an elf in Macy’s Santaland, City Artistic Partnerships‘ production of The Santaland Diaries, promises odd encounters with a disgruntled elf. Opening December 1.
- The Keegan Theatre presents an An Irish Carol opening December 3. Set in a Dublin pub, this telling of Dickens’ classic has all the trappings of the past, present and future.
- Another take on an old classic, The Hub Theatre takes on It’s a Wonderful Life with Wonderful Life opening December 2.
- Seasonal Disorder from Washington Improv Theater is back again this season, offering another round of improv. The perfect escape from guests and relatives? Maybe! Opening December 1.
- The Theater Alliance presents, Black Nativity a retelling of the Christmas story from an Afro-centric perspective, infused with rich gospel, blues, funk, jazz music and dance. Opening December 3.
- American Ballet Theatre performs Alexei Ratmansky’s production of Tchaikovsky’s family holiday classic, The Nutcracker at the Kennedy Center. Opening December 8.
- The Kinsey Sicks in Oy Vey in a Manger at Theater J is back this season with the hilarious Dragapella Beauty-Shop Quartet. Opening December 24.
Still Playing
You can still talk to the animals at Imagination Stage’s Dr. Dolittle. In the mood for some song and dance? The Jersey Boys are still singing away at National Theater and Hairspray continues through to the New Year at Signature Theatre. Folger Theater closes out Othello this weekend as well as The Mistorical Hystery of Henry (I)V at WSC Avant Bard. There is still plenty of Shakespeare to be had at Synetic Theater’s Speak No More: Romeo and Juliet and Shakespeare Theatre Company‘s Much Ado About Nothing. In the mood for love? Catch A Second Chance at Signature Theatre and Pride and Prejudice at Round House Theatre through the end of the month. At Arena Stage, don’t miss You, Nero and Equivocation, both playing through to the New Year.
