The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra.>> The jazz series at the Atlas Performing Arts Center continues tonight with a performance from avant-garde trombonist Grachan Moncur III. Moncur will collaborate with a fine lineup of local talent under the direction of saxophonist Brad Linde. 8 p.m. $15-$35.
>> The Gil Scott-Heron Experience was formed by Gil’s former Musical Director HarrMonika Musik in the wake of Scott-Heron’s death in May of this year. The band will be playing 8 and 10 p.m. sets tonight at Blues Alley, and will feature ace local saxophonist Brian Settles. $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> Smooth jazz keyboardist Marcus Johnson will be playing four nights of holiday favorites at Blues Alley, beginning on Thursday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $27.50 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> Excellent local trumpeter Michael Thomas will lead his group on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.
>> In the late ’60s, the drummer for legendary pianist Ramsey Lewis‘s trio was Maurice White, who would leave the group and go on to form Earth, Wind & Fire in the early ’70s. In 1974, the two reunited to collaborate on Lewis’s Sun Goddess album, which was the high water mark of NEA Jazz Master’s electric period. After spending much of the past 30 years with his acoustic group, Lewis formed an electric band earlier this year to revisit Sun Goddess and play new material. The ensemble will be at the Music Center at Strathmore on Friday for an 8 p.m. show. $28-$68.
>> A couple of years ago, we previewed the first go-round of saxophonist Tim Warfield‘s Christmas program at Bohemian Caverns. Warfield will bring the show back to the caves this Friday and Saturday for 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $25.
>> Drummer Nasar Abadey has been a mainstay of the local scene for decades. He’ll be leading his band, Supernova, through 9 and 11 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.
>> HR-57 hosts regulars Antonio Parker (Friday) and Saltman-Knowles. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $15.
>> NPR’s A Jazz Piano Christmas, the annual holiday celebration at the Kennedy Center, takes place on Saturday. This year’s lineup will feature the Center’s new Artistic Adviser for Jazz, Jason Moran, along side NEA Jazz Master Barry Harris, Latin powerhouse Eddie Palmieri and others. 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets. $55+fees.
>> The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra is a musical gem in the District’s jazz community. They will also be playing holiday favorites with 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. sets on Sunday, plus their usual Monday night time slot (8 p.m.). The program will include Duke Ellington’s jazz arrangement of The Nutcracker Suite, music from Stan Kenton and other seasonal jazz favorites. $15.
>> The fine folks at CapitalBop are staging another one of their fantastic Jazz Lofts on Sunday at the Red Door (443 Eye St NW). This iteration will feature the saxophone section from the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, the Jolley Brothers and Michelle Webb. 7 p.m. $10. BYOB.
