Last week, we told you the National Zoo enlisted the meme machine I Can Haz Cheezburger to name a pair of cheetah cubs born in May at its research facility in Front Royal, Va.
Well, the results are in, and today the zoo’s newest big cats have names. Or, in proper Cheezburger-speak, namez.
Honestly, I was a little afraid that the lolcat fanciers would pick something too-cute and stupid, like, say, “Big Kitteh” or “I Iz Chasing Down Prey.” Instead, they came through with names that actually made sense, even if one of the captions is typically silly.
At right is Damisi, whose name means “happy” in Swahili, though the female cub doesn’t look particularly cheerful in the photo provided by the zoo. And below is Ashaki, who seems to be in better spirits, though I haven’t been able to find what his name means.
So, the Cheezburger partnership seems to not have gone totally amok. I do worry, a bit, about the precedent the naming contest set. First the zoo asks I Can Haz Cheezburger to name a cat. What’s next? The National Aquarium allows 4chan users to name a new sea creature?
