Just as the District has started allowing corporate sponsorship and ads in local parks and recreations centers, the city’s flagship bikesharing network may soon be branded too.

The Huffington Post reported yesterday that city officials are considering a variety of options for Capital Bikeshare, everything from a title sponsorship, ads on signs and maps, and more:

As HuffPost reported in September, title sponsorship — the naming rights to the program and visual branding — are now being considered as major components.

“We envision being able to place your logo on the bike itself,” Moskowitz said. “And then naming rights may also be something that we’ll look at as well, depending on the offers. … Price will be a significant metric that we look at in evaluating our proposals.”

Moskowitz said the bikeshare system is open to any number of advertising schemes, which could include a plan to integrate promotions with the partner company into the program’s daily operations.

New York, whose own bikesharing network is set to launch this year, is also considering how to integrate sponsors and advertisers to defray operational costs.

SmartBike, Capital Bikeshare’s smaller and less useful predecessor, was funded in part through a partnership with Clear Channel Communications, which bought ads in the District’s bus shelters.
