Had it not snowed in New Hampshire today, a delegation of D.C. elected officials and statehood activists would be pushing the message to Granite State legislators that the District should become the 51st State. But it did snow, marking the second time in recent years that Old Man Winter has expressed his obvious disdain for D.C. statehood.

Now that same delegation is hoping that Friday, January 27 is more amenable to the cause, for that’s when they’ve re-scheduled the trip north.

The trip is part of a broader campaign to push state legislatures into supporting D.C. statehood; Florida, Illinois, New York, Tennessee, Maryland and Alaska are also being targeted. New Hampshire has been friendly to the District’s cause before — it was 2008 that the state’s House considered a measure supporting D.C. statehood, but inclement weather made it impossible to get it to a final vote.

Still, at least one group of D.C. residents isn’t particularly convinced that the trip will be worth the time and money. In a statement today, the D.C. GOP argued that it would make more sense to lobby closer to home.

“You don’t need to travel to Concord when the Democratic Senators from Virginia and Maryland oppose D.C. Statehood. Our Mayor and D.C. Councilmembers should save our city money and start in Richmond and Annapolis. Instead of putting D.C. taxpayers on the hook for their trips up to New England and around the country, we should be focusing on our neighbors,” stated Bob Kabel, chairman of the D.C. GOP.

Regardless of what you think of the trip, we’re all wondering — is Adrian Parsons just going to stay up there and wait for January 27?
