If the District wants to build the Washington Redskins a training facility as Mayor Vince Gray has hinted, Loudoun County won’t let the team’s current facility go without a fight.
WTOP reports that last week County Supervisor Shawn Williams penned a letter to team owner Dan Snyder thanking him for keeping the existing training facility in Ashburn for the time being and also dangling the offer of a Redskins Hall of Fame in front on him as an enticement for him to stay. Leesburg Patch got a copy of the letter, in which Williams wrote:
As you know, in 2008 there was a proposal to partner with Loudoun for marketing purposes and to build a Redskins Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, the previous Board narrowly rejected the proposal. As a citizen at that time, I was very concerned about the lost economic development opportunity as well as the unfriendly message that was being sent to your organization and Redskins fans alike. I personally cannot think of a better location for the Redskins Hall of Fame than Loudoun County.
Of course, as the City Paper’s Dave McKenna wrote late last year, the marriage between Snyder and the county hasn’t necessarily been a good one, and if Synder’s good at anything, it’s playing every side to see where he can get the best deal. The scary question is: what will D.C. pony up with to try and get Snyder to look favorably upon a proposed training facility near RFK Stadium?
