Via Austinist, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a 100-percent awesome movie theater in the Texas capital—the high church of movie geekdom in America, perhaps—is expanding to D.C.
Well, close to D.C. And by “close,” they mean the One Loudoun complex in Ashburn, Va., 30 miles from our city! I mean, it’s always a little obnoxious when someone opens a business in the suburbs while affiliating themselves with the hub city, but some place close like, say, Arlington or Silver Spring is one thing. But Ashburn?
Forget public transportation. Want to see an orgy of Troma films, or perhaps a late-night retrospective of the Alien series? Maybe buy one of Alamo’s awesome posters? Too bad if you don’t have a car. Besides, Alamo has had a theater in Winchester, some 75 miles from D.C., since 2009. Dropping anchor in Ashburn will only halve the distance. What a tease.
So, dear sister site, we implore you, in this instance, to split the hairs. Your beloved Alamo Drafthouse is expanding close to D.C., but not actually anywhere conveniently close by. And in the time it can take to drive 30 miles down Virginia State Route 7—hell, might as well get a flight to Texas.
