Last week The Washington Post published the first—and only—interview with former Pennsylvania State University football coach Joe Paterno since his firing amid the scandal over sexual abuse charges against his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The interview, conducted by Post sports columnist Sally Jenkins in Paterno’s home in State College, Pa., turns out to be the final public comment from the legendary coach on his legacy as the winningest coach in Division I college football.

Paterno, 85, who shortly after being dismissed from Penn State announced he was receiving treatment for lung cancer, died this morning, his family announced about 10:30 a.m. (There were erroneous reports he had died last night.)

With Paterno’s death, the Post has released audio of Jenkins’ interview with the football icon.

“I called superiors and I said, ‘Hey we got a problem I think. Would you guys look into it?’,” the raspy-voiced Paterno said in the interview. Listen to about two minutes of Jenkins’ conversation with Paterno:
