On the very day that a D.C. Council committee is debating legislation that would allow police to further crack down on prostitution affecting parts of Ward 7, a candidate for the ward’s seat on the council agreed to community service in the wake of a prostitution-related arrest late last year.

According to the Post, Kevin Chavous, Jr. was in court today, where he signed a deal that would have him do 32 hours of community service and avoid a block along K Street NE as a condition to getting a charge of soliciting a prostitute dropped. Chavous was arrested in December after offering an undercover police officer $20 for oral sex.

Chavous is the son of a former Ward 7 councilmember, and he’s running to replace Councilmember Yvette Alexander. Today the D.C. Council’s Committee on Public Safety was debating legislation introduced by Alexander that would allow police to declare permanent prostitution-free zones, where more that two people congregating for the purposes of paying for or selling sex could be asked to disperse. Currently, the zones are limited to 10 days.
