- The big news for us this week was food-related: it was Tube Meat Week. As part of a celebration of all things encased meats, we spoke to Nate Anda of the Red Apron Butchery and Julien Shapiro of Society Fair, chewed the the fat with Peter Smith and Andrew Markert of PS 7’s, reviewed some of the tube meat options at Eastern Market and indulged in a photo gallery of the many encased meats around town that we didn’t get around to trying. In related news, D.C. half-smoke mainstay Ben’s Chili Bowl learned that it will soon have competition — from one of its former employees.
- In the news, President Obama’s 2013 budget included language on D.C. budget autonomy (which D.C. voting rights activists were cautiously optimistic with), the D.C. elections board gave approval to recall petitions for Mayor Vince Gray and D.C. Council Chair Kwame Brown, Occupy D.C. got occupied, we learned that the robbery of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer wasn’t the first time a jurist has been the victim of a crime, we got a sneak peek of LivingSocial’s new pop-up space and wondered what Newt Gingrich really had planned for Valentine’s Day.
- The D.C. Council got into an expletive-laden shouting match, a Republican senator from Utah showed how much he loves small government (except when it comes to abortions in D.C.), a Virginia personhood bill came closer to becoming law (unintended consequences be damned), Rick Santorum nailed down the thrash metal vote, we were terrified to find out what exactly the Marion Barry machine entails, Florida went flaccid on D.C. statehood, we encouraged everyone to check their voter registration status and a senior D.C. official revealed that hopes for a Redskins training facility in Capitol Hill isn’t just wishful thinking.
- We dug into the vault to find a video of Adele’s 2008 performance at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, looked back on Whitney Houston’s last memorable performance in D.C., spoke to Zola Jesus and reviewed Sharon Van Etten and Flock of Dimes at the Black Cat.
- We spoke to a D.C. beekeeper, looked forward to Arena Stage’s 2012-2013 season and shamelessly exploited our own pets for a photo gallery and cuteness contest.
