A day after Gov. Bob McDonnell and Virginia Republicans amended a controversial ultrasound bill by removing a requirement for an invasive probe for women seeking an abortion, the Virginia Senate prepares to vote on legislation that would define life as starting at conception.
WJLA reports that a Virginia Senate committee voted to approve the bill, and it will next be taken up by the full Senate. That chamber is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling can break tied votes. Pro-choice activists are hoping that all the national attention in the wake of the ultrasound bill will cause the Senate to reject the personhood bill, much as it did another proposal that would have banned abortions after 20 weeks.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Senate committee also approved legislation that would end a required HPV vaccine for young girls.
