A two-block stretch of U Street NW is closed right now while police investigate a collision earlier this morning between a bike and a tractor trailer that sent the cyclist to an area hospital in very serious condition, WAMU reports.
The collision happened on the 1100 block of U Street, and about a dozen police officers were still on the scene as of 9:45 a.m. The above photo, taken shortly after the crash, shows the red bicycle mangled and lying in the middle of the road. Police have closed off U Street between 10th and 12th streets NW as well as a section of V Street NW. Traffic is being rerouted along T Street and Florida Avenue NW.
It’s unclear right now if either the cyclist or the truck driver is at fault for the collision. One witness WAMU spoke with was somewhat disturbed by the crumpled wreckage of the bike sitting in the middle of the street.
“This is a little troubling … the bicycle is in the middle of the street, so it kind of makes me wonder,” said Tim Hull, who was also riding his bike.
