Some might see Leap Day as an excuse for whimsical promotions (we’re looking at you, Z-Burger and Dan Zak), but Mother Nature isn’t smiling on Northern Virginia roadways today.

The Post’s Dr. Gridlock blog reports that at this hour, a stretch of U.S. Route 1 in Alexandria is closed in both directions after being inundated by the heavy rainfall that swept through the area this morning. ARLNow.com reports that the road was closed after water and mud spilled over from a nearby construction site. The heavily-trafficked roadway is shut down between East Custis and Swann avenues, and midday drivers are being advised to use alternate routes like the George Washington Parkway.

But you might want to take that recommendation with a grain of salt. Earlier this morning, while the rain was still falling, a collision on the George Washington Parkway led to a nearby stretch of that road being closed for about an hour. The parkway is open again, but with more heavy rain expected later this evening, drivers everywhere might want to steel themselves for a hairy trip home.
