Photo by Matt.DunnThe news that the District’s Latino population keeps growing isn’t new, but now you can better visualize how the city’s shifting fortunes have affected where Latinos tend to live.
R.U. Seriousing Me? took Census numbers and published a handy infographic today on how the District’s Latino population—which grew 21.8 percent from 2000 to 2010—has started decamping from Mt. Pleasant and Columbia Heights to points further north. Neighborhoods like Brightwood Park, Petworth and Park View have seen an increase in Latino residents recently; the City Paper reported that the Latino Economic Development Corporation has similarly left its Adams Morgan office and is looking for space along Georgia Avenue. In fact, Ward 1 is the only part of the city that lost Latino residents in the decade from 2000-2010; ward 5 and 7 saw increases of over 150 percent.
Also interesting is the diversity of Latinos that are coming to the District. While Hondurans led the charge with a 150 percent increase, they were followed closely by Venezuelans (141 percent increase) and Colombians (131 percent.) In absolute numbers, though, immigrants from El Salvador far outnumber those from any other country.
Of course, none of this helps our chances of winning statehood under Rick Santorum’s eventual presidency, now does it?
