>> Ellsworth Gibson was the long time jazz band leader on the top floor of Eighteenth Street Lounge. A group of local veterans will pay tribute to Gibson on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.
>> A skilled saxophonist based out of Baltimore, Tim Green, started playing with greats such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter even before he finished his jazz education. With his own group, he plays music that mixes his strong jazz background with a heavy gospel influence to create a truly infectious sound. Green & Co. will play Bohemian Caverns this Friday and Saturday with 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $18.
>> Jeff Antoniuk & The Jazz Update was among the first jazz acts we profiled here at DCist. The band will be at Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday along with special guest saxophonist, Ralph Bowen. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.
>> HR-57 hosts regulars Antonio Parker (Friday) and Darius Scott (Saturday). 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $15.
>> The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra is a treasure of the local scene, providing high quality music by the District’s best, and very inexpensively. Unfortunately, they perform on Monday nights, which is not always the most convenient time for folks to go out. That changes on Saturday, when the orchestra plays a 3 p.m. matinee show at Bohemian Caverns. $15.
>> The Hot Club on San Francisco recreates the gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt that was wildly popular in pre-WWII Paris. The band will be at the Barns of Wolf Trap on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. show. $30.
>> Smooth jazz saxophonist Mindi Abair pays a visit to The Hamilton this Saturday for 8 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $20-$30.
>> The folks at CapitalBop will once again host their monthly D.C. Jazz Loft co-host another one of their DIY shows on Saturday at The Dunes. This iteration will feature fiery New York-based saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo and his big band, along with local steel pan artist Victor Provost (we will be running an interview with Provost later this week). 8:30 p.m. $15. D’Angelo’s band will also be playing a free 6 p.m. show on the Millennium Stage.
>> Local afrobeat band, The Funk Ark, is the brainchild of keyboardist Will Rast. The group has been steadily gaining a following over the past few years and is gearing up to release its second album. Catch a preview on Saturday at Montserrat House. 9 p.m.
>> Transparent Productions continues its spring series at Bohemian Caverns on Sunday with Bill Cole‘s Untempered Ensemble. Cole specializes in playing non-Western wind instruments, including the Australian didgeridoo and the Indian nadaswaram. The ensemble is a septet that also includes more traditional instrumentation and a vocalist. 7 p.m. $15 in advance/$20 at the door.
>> Elijah Balbed is a talented young saxophonist who plays in a number of ensembles around town, including The Funk Ark and the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra. On Monday, however, Balbed will be leading his own quintet on the Millennium Stage. 6 p.m. Free.
>> Blue Monday Blues hosts the Charlie Sayles Band. 6 to 9 p.m. $15.
>> Blues Alley will host two local big bands on Monday, beginning with the Columbia Community Jazz Band at 7 p.m. and Swing Machine at 9 p.m. $15 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
