We know that some readers take umbrage with the frequent bicycle enthusiasm shown by this site’s editors. Although we’ll never quite know why some people hate bikes, one thing they’ll always have on cars is that they don’t need to fill up at the gas pump.

The average price of a gallon of gasoline in the D.C. area is up 35 cents over the past year, according to data collected by WTOP. The latest round of the radio station’s “Pain in the Gas” survey revealed that the price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel ticked up another 3 cents in the past week to $4.07. The average mid-grade price is $4.26 and premium is at $4.37.

At $4.17 a gallon, D.C. has the fourth-highest average gas prices in the country, according to figures kept by the website GasBuddy.com. Prices tend to be lower in Virginia, where a gallon of is $4.01, and Maryland, where it’s $4.04.

But in some parts of the District, it’s way higher than that. A gallon of regular unleaded at the Exxon station near the Watergate will cost you $5.49, WTOP reported.
