Howard University’s athletic program looks to be in some hot water, with news breaking that the school is suspending all of its varsity sports teams after an apparent violation of NCAA regulations, the City Paper reports.

In a brief statement released to City Desk, university spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton said:

It is with great regret that we have temporarily suspended intercollegiate athletic competition. This is a self-imposed action while the University conducts a review. We are working quickly to resolve this issue.

It is not yet known which teams or personnel are involved in this investigation. We’ve left word with Howard University, as well as the NCAA and will update when more is learned.

UPDATE, 4:30 p.m.: Still no word back from either Howard administrators or the NCAA, but the City Paper has heard from a few student athletes affected by the self-imposed suspension, with one saying that “many athletes have had their eligibility taken away and that has affected many sports dramatically.” A member of the school’s bowling team tells the City Paper that the university investigation might revolve around textbook vouchers given to athletes that were spent on other items instead of books, which would possible be a violation of NCAA rules.

UPDATE, 12:30 a.m.: Howard University spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton sent the following statement:

Howard University is conducting an internal investigation of possible NCAA rules-violations. As a result of this process, the University temporarily withheld a number of student-athletes from competition as self-imposed action. Most teams will compete as scheduled. We are working diligently to fully resolve this matter as quickly as a possible. In order to protect the integrity of this review, we are unable to share additional details at this time.
