Photo courtesy of car2goAs we recently reported, car-sharing in D.C. has recently gotten more competitive, with car2go and Hertz OnDemand joining Zipcar in providing cars to those that don’t have them.
But despite having new competitors, the Examiner reported yesterday that Zipcar is raising prices on its cars, increasing hourly rental costs between 1.5 to 2.5 percent, depending on the car. Car2go, meanwhile, is looking to steal away some drivers—it has waived it’s $35 registration fee and is offering 30 minutes worth of free driving for anyone who uses the “CAPITAL” promo code while signing up.
Still, I’m not convinced that the two are competitors as much as they complement each other. Zipcar is still cheaper by the hour, but car2go offers much more immediate flexibility of use. I’d surely trust Zipcar if I knew I needed a car at a specific time; car2go is better for more impulsive uses. (I now have both, in addition to a SmarTrip card, bike, Capital Bikeshare membership, car, and even rollerblades. How multimodal!)
Either way, there’s no better time than now to get in on car-sharing.
