In February Interior Secretary Ken Salazar ordered that a controversial paraphrased quote on the Martin Luther King, Jr. be changed to better reflect what the civil rights leader actually said.

WTOP reports today that plans for the change to the “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness” quote are moving ahead steadily, and the the National Park Service hopes to keep to Salazar’s schedule of making the change within a year. Still, the change won’t be free, and the National Park Service may ask for private donations to cover the cost.

The memorial, which opened last August, cost $120 million to build. Shortly thereafter a number of civil rights and cultural leaders complained that the paraphrased quote made King sound like an “arrogant twit,” as Maya Angelou famously wrote.
