An off-duty Montgomery County Police Department officer died early Monday morning when shot himself following a traffic stop in which he was suspected of driving under the influence, Maryland State Police say.

The Associated Press reports that Jed Bylsma, who lived in Gettysburg, Pa., was pulled over for speeding. by a state trooper about 1:30 a.m. on Route 50 in Queen Anne in Talbot County. The trooper who stopped Bylsma noticed he appeared to be intoxicated and returned to his cruiser for backup, authorities said. At that point, Bylsma sped off and the officer started pursuing.

State police used “stop sticks” to deflate the tires on Bylsma’s Nissan during the nine-mile chase, according to the Examiner. Once Bylsma’s vehicle was stopped, state police found him with a gunshot wound to the head and a gun near his hand, the AP reported.
