Looks like the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors made the right decision in February when it started taking the public’s input on what to name the eight stations of Metro’s forthcoming Silver Line that will traverse the county.

In a turn away from the board’s original proposal of naming half the stations after Tysons Corner and the other half after Reston, it seems that the people prefer a bit of variety on the route to Dulles International Airport. The eight names proposed actually make sense:

  • McLean
  • Tysons Corner
  • Greensboro
  • Spring Hill
  • Wiehle-Reston East
  • Reston Town Center
  • Herndon
  • Innovation Center

“The riders have spoken and I hope the names that we have chosen are more acceptable than before,” Metro Board Chairwoman Catherine M. Hudgins, who is also a Fairfax supervisor, told WTOP.

Yes, they are more acceptable than before. Not that we ever want to be reminded that Tysons Corner and its spider’s nest of on-ramps to shopping-mall parking decks exists, but it’s a relief to see only one station taking that name.

To think that that Fairfax County originally wanted to send Metrorail riders down a path that would begin at “Tysons-McLean” and continue through “Tysons I & II,” “Tysons Central” and “Tysons-Spring Hill Road.” Confusing! And it seems the 16,000 people who answered the survey or attended one of several recent public forums agreed, WTOP reported.
