The Hell That the Metro Map Could Have Been
There’s a reason that we don’t leave everything up to the public alone. This possible Metro map is a good example of why.

A Victory/For Shorter-Name Advocates
WMATA’s Board of Directors is meeting today to discuss a variety of issues, from the system’s on-time performance and standards to the possibility of reducing the number of cars on the proposed extension to Dulles International Airport. One recommendation of particular interest, though, would be a big win for those who favor more concise names for stations around the system.
A few months ago, I opined that many of Metro’s station names are far too superfluous and should be rolled back somewhat to increase clarity. Of course, this isn’t quite what I had in mind when I made that suggestion.

Metro Map Makeover On The Cards
WTOP’s Adam Tuss reports that the WMATA system map, as iconic a piece of modern Washingtoniana as there is, will be undergoing some big changes in the near future to accommodate the expansion to Dulles International Airport and (sigh) potentially longer station names. (For example: ANC 6D is considering changing the name of L’Enfant Plaza to L’Enfant Plaza/Banneker Memorial.)
