Mayor Vince Gray is anything but inconsistent when it comes to branding. From his “One City” campaign slogan came everything from “One City” lapel pins worn by administration officials to the “One City” puzzle. He’s slapped the slogan on to initiatives—”One City, One Hire,” for example—and even implemented an official policy mandating that it be put on all official letterhead, publications and signage. This is One City—at least in writing.

So maybe it should have been no surprise when D.C. Department of Transportation officials confirmed yesterday that the H Street NE streetcar—set to roll in 2013—will be known as the “One City Line.” Not surprisingly, the news set off a round of jokes on Twitter. What’s next? One City Brau? One City United? One City-ist?

Beyond any jokes we can make about One City, we would have imagined that someone would have thought this one through a little more carefully. We can’t be the only ones already waiting for the inevitable first streetcar mishap to deploy the “One City Goes Off the Rails” headline, after all.

UPDATE, 10:21 a.m.: Pedro Ribiero, a spokesman for Gray, writes in an email that “One City Line” is just a “working title” for the streetcar line that will eventually stretch from Georgetown to Benning Road NE.
